MLK Community Healthcare releases first-ever “Nursing Year in Review”

Despite a challenging year of high patient volume, new report shows extraordinary accomplishments of nurses at award-winning, safety-net hospital and health system

May 10, 2023 – MLK Community Healthcare (MLKCH) – recognized nationally for its quality, innovation and outspoken advocacy on behalf of the most vulnerable – continued to outperform in 2022 thanks in large part to the extraordinary efforts and accomplishments of its 500+ nursing staff.

Those efforts – and the inspired stories behind them – are the subject of a new “Nursing Year in Review: 2022” report published May 10 by the award-winning hospital and health system.

“It’s an exacting time to be a nurse in America and yet our nurses rose to every challenge,” said Dr. Elaine Batchlor, CEO of MLK Community Healthcare.  “From finding creative solutions to treat patients in one of LA’s busiest emergency departments to meeting the requirements necessary to earn a 5-star CMS rating, they brought us to a new standard of excellence.”

MLKCH nurses exceeded national benchmarks on a number of closely-watched measurements, including infections, falls and patient-centered care.  Those accomplishments contributed, in no small part, to MLKCH receiving a 5-star CMS rating and being certified as an inpatient diabetes Center of Excellence in 2022.

These and other accomplishments put MLKCH firmly on the road towards Nursing Magnet Designation, a goal the organization hopes to achieve in the next five years.

“We’re the little engine that could,” said Gena Welch, senior director of nursing administration at MLKCH.  “Despite the financial and structural challenges we face as a safety-net hospital, our nurses continue to show that compassionate care and high quality results are possible.”
