Lessons from the end of her mother’s life

In a new piece in “The Washington Post,” MLK Community Healthcare CEO Dr. Elaine Batchlor writes about her firsthand experience with the structural racism that underlies our American medical system.

In the last weeks of her 92-year-old mother’s life, Dr. Batchlor found herself battling with doctors and a medical system that favors cost above patient care to have her mother treated with the care and respect she deserved. 

Her mother’s story isn’t anomaly, but part of the built-in bias of our health system. “Black people do not get the quality of health care that would allow them to trust the medical system with their lives,” Dr. Batchlor writes. And the “consequences of their experiences are cumulative.”
