Disney, Harnessing the Power of Creativity

Disney believes in making dreams come true. As a key supporter of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital Art Fund initiative, Disney aims to enrich the lives of kids and families by providing happiness, hope, and laughter to those who need it most.

Being a good corporate citizen is a time-honored Disney tradition. The company has a long history of supporting hospitals and focuses on being a good local and global citizen, while demonstrating leadership as a caring, compassionate company. This tradition dates back to the 1930s when Walt himself would visit with children, often accompanied by Disney characters and animators.

Creativity that Comforts, Heals, and Helps

Disney made a generous grant toward the Art Fund initiative as part of the establishment of a healing art program at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital. In recognition of research clearly showing that the visual environment plays an important role in the healing process, the initiative promises to improve the healthcare experience of patients, their families, visitors, and staff by promoting harmony of mind, body, and spirit. Through Disney’s contribution, the hospital will help provide art that is varied in style, and invites families from all walks and stages of life to benefit from the healing experience of art. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital and Disney will help to inspire a healthy, diverse, vibrant, and engaged South Los Angeles community by fostering a restorative, calming, peaceful environment for families in need of medical attention.

“Disney proudly supports the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital and the founding of its Art Fund initiative to help families build a bridge to a happier, healthier and brighter tomorrow,” said Kevin Callahan, vice president of community and engagement, Corporate Citizenship at Disney. “We are excited about harnessing the power of creativity to provide a sense of comfort and normalcy that can help and heal families in need, and we are truly honored to do so when it matters most.”

The hospital’s core values—caring, respect, innovation, community, and excellence—are mirrored in Disney’s approach to bringing positive, lasting change to local communities in countless ways. Together, we believe that small individual actions can have a large collective impact that can transform lives.

Funds from the program will go toward acquisition of art from local, national, and international talent, as well as to the creation of an audio tour that will offer details on each piece. The art acquired will represent a mix of mediums, and plans call for the hospital to work with local art organizations to ensure the collection is reflective of the community.
