Nurse's care for a maternity patient earns her a 2021 Daisy Award

Gina Paz, a labor and delivery clinical unit supervisor who oversees the care for MLK Community Healthcare (MLKCH) patient mothers, was awarded the 2021 spring DAISY Award. The peer-nominated award, sponsored by the non-profit DAISY Foundation, is given to nurses who go above and beyond for their patients. More than 4,800 healthcare facilities and schools across the nation and in 28 other countries present the award annually to their top nursing staff.

When an expecting mother was admitted to the MLKCH perinatal unit, she arrived afraid and nervous. Gina’s compassion and caring bedside manner gained the patient's tranquility and trust. Little did the patient know, the MLKCH staff gave her the surprise of a lifetime, she was to deliver twins!

Baby number one’s delivery went smoothly. Baby number two’s delivery was met with complications. Gina dived into action to direct the team. Her calm leadership was instrumental in saving the second baby’s life. Because she and her team provided high quality care, Gina assured a safe birth for all three patients.

“Gina was one of the original MLKCH employees before our hospital even opened in 2015,” said Tammy Turner. “Her attention to detail and level of caring is exactly what exemplifies a MLKCH nurse. We are so happy she continues to be part of the MLKCH family.”

Paz was nominated by her manager for exemplifying the organization’s core values: Caring, Collaboration, Accountability, Respect and Excellence.
