Coming full circle

When Dr. Hsiao-Wei Banks’ mother passed from cancer, she left behind two children with no family and nowhere to go.

That is, until Alicia “TT” Nichols pulled up in her van.

This story follows third-year resident Dr. Banks, who along with her younger brother, became part of a large, blended family in South LA headed by a strong foster mother and grandmother. Driven by the memory of her mother’s days in the hospitals and the desire to honor her, Dr. Banks single-mindedly pursues her dream of becoming a doctor and giving back to the community that raised her.

Through her eyes, we explore what it means to come full circle at MLKCH, and how much more work there is to be done.
