Inside the residency

The Internal Medicine Residency Program was launched in 2022 to train the next generation of doctors as health equity champions and caregivers for the underserved.  

Providing compassionate care to our patients requires a deep understanding of the circumstances that influence their health—from social and economic challenges, to cultural values, to the realities of living with complex and chronic illnesses. 

This story follows a third-year resident who grew up in South LA. Dr. Monica Banks cares for patients during a rotation in the busy Emergency Department. Through her eyes, we explore powerful partnerships with our neighbor, Charles Drew University, a Historically Black Graduate Institution, and Cedars-Sinai, a world-renowned academic medical center.
